Blanket Wrap Insulation

What Is Blanket Insulation?

Blanket wrap insulation is a type of insulation material that comes in rolls or batts (large blankets). It’s typically made of fiberglass, although it can also be made from other materials like mineral wool or natural fibers like cotton or sheep’s wool.

The insulation is called “blanket wrap” because it resembles a large blanket that can be wrapped around various structural components within a building to provide thermal insulation. It’s commonly used in walls, floors, ceilings, and attics to help regulate indoor temperature and improve energy efficiency by reducing heat transfer.

Blanket wrap insulation is relatively easy to install, as it can be cut to fit around obstacles such as studs, joists, and electrical wiring. It’s also available in different thicknesses and R-values (a measure of thermal resistance), allowing builders and homeowners to choose the appropriate level of insulation for their specific needs and climate conditions.

Application:

  • Walls: Blanket wrap insulation is frequently installed in the walls of buildings to reduce heat transfer between the interior and exterior spaces. It helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature and improves energy efficiency by reducing the need for heating and cooling.

  • Attics: Attics are often under-insulated areas where heat can escape in the winter and enter in the summer. Blanket wrap insulation is installed between the attic floor joists or over the attic floor to prevent heat loss or gain, improving overall energy efficiency and helping to regulate indoor temperatures.

  • Floors: In buildings with raised floors, such as homes with crawl spaces or buildings with raised foundations, blanket wrap insulation can be installed between the floor joists to provide thermal insulation. This helps prevent heat loss through the floors and improves comfort in living spaces above.

  • Ceilings: In addition to attics, blanket wrap insulation can also be installed in ceilings to provide thermal insulation and improve energy efficiency. This is particularly important in rooms located directly beneath unconditioned spaces, such as garages or unfinished attics.

  • Soundproofing: Blanket wrap insulation can also serve as a sound barrier, helping to reduce noise transmission between rooms or from exterior sources. This can be especially beneficial in multi-family housing units, home theaters, or areas where sound privacy is desired.

  • Pipe and Duct Insulation: In addition to insulating building envelopes, blanket wrap insulation can be used to insulate pipes and ductwork to prevent heat loss or gain and to protect against freezing in cold climates.
