These panels are commonly employed for ceilings or for walls requiring a specified fire-resistant rating.
When utilized on ceilings, 5/8-inch-thick panels demonstrate reduced susceptibility to sagging between the joists compared to 1/2-inch panels. The addition of popcorn texture or other heavy surfacing materials exacerbates this weight issue, making 5/8-inch drywall a preferable choice for ceilings.
Thicker drywall may be mandated by code for walls or ceilings covered with texture or skim coat where studs or joists are spaced 24 inches on-center, rather than the standard 16 inches. Often referred to as fire-resistant drywall, this thicker variant is commonly utilized in common walls between residential living spaces and attached garages, as well as in furnace rooms. Achieving fire resistance can also involve installing multiple layers of thinner drywall panels.
Applicable for walls or ceilings that require fire rating beyond 20 minutes
