What is R-Value & How Does It Affect My Comfort?

What is R-Value & How Does It Affect My Comfort?

With insulation comes R-values, or resistance values, which simply is used to measure how effective the insulation is resisting heat flow. These values fluctuate based on the geographic regions.

Different insulation materials have different thicknesses per inch. The thicker the insulation, the more it resists heat transfer.

  • Fiberglass Insulation: 2.7-3 per inch

  • Cellulose Insulation: 3.4-3.8 per inch

  • Spray Foam Insulation (closed-cell): R6

Rule of Thumb: The lower the R-value, the lower the insulating effectiveness; the higher the R-value, the higher the insulating effectiveness.

Recommended R-Value for Home Insulation

To ensure that your home comfort is maintained, your heating system should replace the heat that is lost in the winter, and your cooling system will remove the heat that is gained in the summer.

Some potential factors that could affect your homeowner needs are the following:

  1. How do you heat and cool your home? Is it baseboard heating? Heat Pump? C-vac?

  2. Where do you live? Certain geographic regions require a different R-value depending on the climate temperature.

  3. How was your home built? Is there existing insulation? Do you have a basement?

The R-values should not stay consistent throughout your home; instead, they oscillate based on the space within your home. For example, exterior walls should have an optimal R-value of 24.

On the other hand, attics should have an R-value of R60 and the basement/garage exterior walls should have R20.
